Foundation Coffee

The term "hidden gem" is used with restaurants that might be off the beaten path or doesn't have much of an appearance from the street. Not sure how often it's used to describe a place that many people can't even find. If you're lucky enough to find Foundation Coffee, you'll be glad you did. In Fairfax on the corner of Main St. and Pickett Road there's a shopping plaza, ok there's two, actually there's three. Stay with me. On the Northwest corner, the biggest plaza, Fair City Mall, has a few large stores. Sierra, Burlington, DSW to name a few. Foundation coffee is BEHIND that plaza. Yes, where you don't usually drive unless you made a wrong turn. Where the loading docks are for trucks. That's exactly where it is. In an old loading dock. The story can be found here. Reusing the large open space allows for some pretty unique and interesting concepts. The coffee bar right in the middle as a large island. Some stadium seating above to sit and look down as you work. It's visually a well done space considering it's one big open room. Every time I've been to Foundation Coffee it reminds me of a library on a college campus. Most everyone is working on a laptop or tablet and it's very quiet. A full coffee bar and a good selection of bake goods. The usual coffee selection of scones, muffins and croissants. They also have sausage rolls and mini pizzas for people in the mood for something savory. If you have a real sweet tooth they have a number of different cakes offered by the slice as well. It's a great place if you're looking for somewhere quiet, get some work done, grab a coffee and something small to snack on. Friendly staff, quality foods and relaxing atmosphere. Unusual for a coffee shop but they are closed on Sundays. So check them out during the week or on Saturdays. I think you'll enjoy Foundation Coffee if that's what you're looking for. If you can find it.
