Less than a block off King St. in Old Town Alexandria is a time machine that takes you back to your childhood - when you were excited to head down to the local ice cream shop and whatever flavor you got tasted like summer. Goodies remembers exactly how that feels and recreates it in a delicious way. This small building with just a take out window turns out big flavors. Goodies doesn’t serve the standard ice cream but a step up from ice cream: frozen custard. Custard is thicker, richer, and creamier. They call it ‘Wisconsin-style’ custard. If anyone knows their dairy, it’s Wisconsin. Vanilla is the staple they build their daily specials on and it would be hard to find a more delicious vanilla in the area. The biggest issue is wanting to try all they have to offer: scoops, milkshakes, floats, sundaes, and their famous Donutwich. The Donutwich is a soft, fresh donut cut in half with custard in between then drizzled with your choice of sauce. It’s even better than it sounds. In the fall Goodies offers The Big Apple: a cinnamon-sugar cake donut filled with vanilla- bean frozen custard and drizzled with caramel. With signature sundaes and shakes, this tiny place has plenty to offer. From cookies and crème, to. peanut butter, to turtle, to banana pudding with Nila wafers - they really have so many options you’ll want to come back again and again.
The custard and treats are some of the best you’ll find in Northern Virginia and the service is right up there with it. The sweets are enough to come back for but, if you’re lucky enough to meet the owner, he’s another big reason. He really seems to understand what makes Goodies special. Why people keep coming back. How to insure it has a nostalgic feel and never loses what makes it so unique. Keep in mind the day and the weather. Goodies is only opened Thursday through Sunday, noon to 6 pm, or until they sell out. Also, they only offering outdoor seating.
