Môtier

To say the town of Clifton is small is an obvious statement. With just 243 residents, no stoplights, and their last mayor winning the election as a write-in candidate with only 67 votes, Clifton stands as one of the smallest towns in Northern Virginia. Yet, despite its size, Clifton boasts an impressive array of dining options, perhaps more incredible restaurants per capita than any other place in the state. Whether you’re seeking a dinner for a special occasion, coffee with friends, Sunday brunch, or simply some ice cream (fun fact: the ice cream shop is owned by the mayor), Clifton has it all.

Enter Môtier, a culinary gem that opened its doors in the summer of 2021, courtesy of chef-owner Ivar Setiawan, who brought his French-inspired culinary skills to Clifton, his mother’s hometown. As you step through the door, you’re immediately greeted by the sight of croissants and canelés on display. However, Môtier offers much more than just delicious pastries. Indulge in desserts like crème brûlée, a variety of tarts, and macarons.

But Môtier isn’t just about baked goods, desserts, and coffee; it offers an updated lunch menu and a prix-fixe dinner menu on Thursday evenings. Due to its extremely limited seating—just over a dozen or so seats—I highly recommend making reservations well in advance, as they tend to fill up quickly.

Opening a new restaurant in Clifton might seem daunting, given the town’s high culinary expectations. However, Môtier has not only met but exceeded all expectations, becoming a beautiful addition to this charming little town’s culinary scene.
