Peterson's Ice Cream Depot

When thinking of Clifton, Virginia, Key West, Florida doesn’t immediately come to mind. They don’t have a lot in common—unless you head to Peterson’s Ice Cream Depot. Owners Jean and Tom Peterson, inspired by their favorite getaway, sought to recreate Key West’s laid-back, relaxed atmosphere in an ice cream shop.

In 2005, after decades of teaching and coaching in Fairfax County, Tom decided Clifton needed a local ice cream shop. With no background in the food industry, this was a labor of love and passion. In April of 2006, Peterson’s Ice Cream Depot opened its windows. Anyone who’s been to Peterson’s can say it’s more than succeeded in all its goals.

In its first year, with only two soft-serve machines and three flavors, Peterson’s began building a loyal following. As the years passed, they continued to grow, eventually becoming the dream ice cream shop they envisioned—and then some.

Clifton boasts incredible places to eat. Villagio is right across the street, Môtier is a block away, Trummer’s is two doors down—but Peterson’s was there first, setting the stage for the town’s dining scene.

Their website details the history and growth of Peterson’s Ice Cream Depot, and I encourage you to give it a read. It’s truly a wonderful story.

Peterson’s offers a charming small-town vibe, with staff ensuring everyone feels like family as soon as they walk up to the window. No matter what style you're in the mood for Peterson's offering both soft and scoopable ice cream, all made in-house.

Clifton has many incredible dining options. No matter the time of day or what you’re in the mood for, you can find something delicious in Clifton. Wherever you go, be sure to end your Clifton dining experience with a visit to Peterson’s Ice Cream Depot. It’s the perfect way to cap off a day in this delightful town.
