After strolling around Occoquan, you might find yourself craving something sweet. A visit to Potomac Chocolate is a must. This small store churns out big flavors, showcasing the true artistry of chocolate making. Owner Ben Rasmussen’s passion shines through in each bar and bonbon he creates. Distinct from a chocolatier, he not only crafts confections from chocolate but also produces the chocolate itself, from bean to bar. Few places in the area undertake this process. Roasting and grinding personally selected beans, the aroma greets you as you enter the shop, drawing you in like a cartoon character with your nose leading the way. The dedication to his craft is evident in every item. In addition to chocolate, Potomac Chocolate offers gelato and espresso, which can be enjoyed separately or together in an affogato. What began as a basement business has blossomed into a labor of love under Rasmussen’s stewardship. His expertise shines as he guides customers through the array of flavors available. However, be warned: this experience may spoil you for other chocolates in the future. On my last visit, I learned that Potomac Chocolate will soon launch a pizza pop-up called Graffiti Cat Pizza. I’m eager to return and sample it. If Rasmussen infuses even half the passion into pizza as he does into chocolate, it’s bound to be another culinary delight.
