Spelunker's

I usually steer clear of fast food. It’s often the quickest and easiest option but rarely the best when it comes to taste or health. However, when a fast-food spot manages to exceed the typical drive-thru standards, it’s a welcome surprise. Spelunker’s Burgers & Frozen Custard is one such place.

Set in a former Long John Silver’s since 2002, Spelunker’s has been serving up fresh-made burgers, fries, and frozen custard. Conveniently located near the north entrance to Shenandoah National Park’s Skyline Drive and just off I-66, it’s a much better option than the standard chain burger joints at every other exit.

What sets Spelunker’s apart is the quality of its ingredients. The custard might be frozen, but the burger patties certainly aren’t. Made from a flavorful mix of chuck and brisket, the beef is ground twice a day to ensure freshness and top-notch quality. You can taste the difference in each bite.

The fries receive the same level of care. Sliced multiple times a day with the skin left on for extra flavor and texture, the potatoes are as fresh as can be—confirmed by the boxes stacked in plain view when you walk in.

Owned and operated by Bill Antonelli, his son Steve, and Steve’s wife April, Spelunker’s has brought a refreshing change to Front Royal. Steve, a Northern Virginia native, grew up loving the Frozen Dairy Bar in Falls Church, which sparked his passion for frozen custard and inspired him to share it with the community.

With a newly revamped drive-thru, it’s easier than ever to grab a burger and custard. While the exterior might resemble a typical fast-food joint, the quality and taste are far from ordinary. A stop at Spelunker’s isn’t just about convenience; it’s about craving a juicy, flavorful burger, perfectly crispy fries and a creamy custard to finish it off.
