In 2012, the DMV streets were graced by Chef on Wheels, an exceptional food truck created by the talented Chef Basir. His success with the iconic ‘red truck’ led to the establishment of his first brick-and-mortar location just five years later: Taco Zocalo in Reston. Chef Basir has remained true to what makes his menu special, using only fresh ingredients and crafting everything in-house, including their flavorful salsas and hot sauces. The commitment to excellence shines through in every dish, from their mouthwatering tacos, burritos, and quesadillas to their perfectly warm chips. While the menu is concise, its quality speaks volumes, with a variety of protein options including Chicken Tinga, Grilled Chicken, BBQ Chicken, Beef Barbacoa, BBQ Brisket, Steak, Chorizo, Ground Beef, Veggie, Fish, Shrimp, and the exclusive Birria tacos available only on Sundays and Tuesdays. The array of options extends to their corn or flour tortillas, complemented by their four signature sauces: Hot Habanero, Roasted Jalapeño Salsa Verde, Pineapple Habanero, and Mustard Habanero, all conveniently available on every table and for purchase to enjoy at home.
The undeniable success of the Reston location comes as no surprise to those who have experienced its culinary delights. It was only a matter of time before more Taco Zocalo establishments would grace Northern Virginia. With upcoming openings in Falls Church and Sterling, the total will reach five locations, including Ashburn and Chantilly. In my opinion, the more, the merrier. While Northern Virginia boasts several excellent taco spots, once you’ve experienced the excellence of Taco Zocalo, it’s hard to settle for anything less. Taco Zocalo has undeniably set the standard for tacos in the area, and I doubt anyone else does it better.
