The Buttery

Virginia boasts a captivating blend of history seamlessly intertwined with the present day. There’s an undeniable charm to wandering through buildings and homes that have stood for over 200 years. Nestled approximately an hour from the D.C. beltway lies the quaint town of Millwood, Virginia. While Millwood may not be on everyone’s radar, if you’re seeking one of Northern Virginia’s most distinctive and enchanting dining experiences, look no further than The Buttery.

Constructed in 1804 as a storehouse for barrels of liquor, or “butts,” for the workers at Burwell-Morgan Mill, the building now houses The Buttery, a restaurant that opened its doors in August 2019, paying homage to its historical roots. As expected from a structure of its age, The Buttery is cozy, with the main indoor dining room accommodating roughly half a dozen tables. Weather permitting, guests can enjoy the expansive back patio and front porch, effectively doubling the restaurant’s seating capacity. Given its intimate setting, reservations are strongly recommended; securing one for Sunday brunch was indeed a stroke of luck.

While many eateries tout their commitment to locally sourced, farm-to-table ingredients, The Buttery truly embodies this ethos. With a menu that changes every three weeks to showcase the freshest, in-season fare, dining here is a culinary adventure. Available exclusively for Sunday brunch, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday dinner, the menu features a thoughtful selection of dishes. Check online for their new features in the restaurant constantly changing. From frequent wine tastings to Sunday night family-style dinners, The Buttery consistently offers new and enticing options for discerning food enthusiasts, making repeat visits to Millwood an enticing prospect.

Personally, I find myself wishing I lived closer to The Buttery, eager to explore their ever-evolving menu and sample their latest creations. Yet, the distance from D.C. has its advantages, ensuring that securing a reservation remains feasible. Is The Buttery worth the drive? Absolutely. Regardless of your location in Northern Virginia, the experience of dining in a 200-year-old building, complemented by an innovative menu and impeccable service, is unparalleled.

It’s also worth noting the exceptional staff at The Buttery, whose unwavering dedication enhances the overall dining experience. From their warm hospitality to their meticulous attention to detail, every member of the team contributes to elevating an already memorable meal within the walls of a building steeped in history.
